In 1935 Herman Schaalman was invited by the Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion to continue his studies with them instead of continuing in Germany. He became one of 11 scholars the College - Institute saved from the Nazis. He was ordained a rabbi in 1941 from the College - Institute.
