THINKING Jewishly
BY REB SH'MUEL
Greetings From Our Friends
I felt greatly honored last week at the Chofetz Chaim Dinner when I was handed a scroll by Mrs. Nathan Silver, who herself had given so much of her time and effort to make this affair the great success it was. An honor like that is always pleasant, of course, but it seemed to me that I should have shared it with many others who have done more for Chofetz Chaim than I can with my limited resources. I was glad to have helped in the promotion of this event, but it took the close collaboration and efforts of people like Mr. Meyer Goldberg, who, as president of the Chofetz Chaim Day School, should really have been the recipient of the top honors. Also I like to mention Eddy Jacobs who has been the school's biggest supporter since its beginnings. Other people who did more than I have and certainly should be on a special honor scroll are Maurice Lowenthal, Albert Harris, Alfred Katz and Chas. Freikin, president of Young Israel. Ben Ritter and Hyman Moskowitz were very helpful in participating in the arrangements.
It would be amiss to forget the many ladies who acted as hostesses, and my only reason for not listing all their names is that I might inadvertently miss a name and hurt somebody's feelings. This is always a real problem for a newspaper and please accept my bouquet of thanks as a group. Nobody could have worked harder and it really was a joy to see the many familiar faces. As I walked from table to table to greet guests and participants alike, I felt proud to see the many friends Chofetz Chaim has made over the years. My heart was full of joy that evening to see friends who only recently have become interested in this great educational effort and I want to thank Mrs. A. B. Cohen for her interest and participation. I think that Mrs. Manfried Rabenstein spoke for all the women, and her. speech reminded me again of the important in-fluence of the wife in the home when it comes to Jewish education. I thought the food and table arrange-
merits were splendid, even if my special diet did not permit me to share it with you. But the highlight for me, and I am sure to everyone else was the splendid program. Rabbi David L. Silver's speech praising our Cin-cinnati Chofetz Chaim and his appraisal of our work in terms of national importance gave me deeper satisfaction than any scroll or memento. The thrilling voice of Cantor Sholom Katz will be remembered by me and all participants. I also was greatly touched by the recorded voice of Rabbi Eliezer Silver who spoke to us from his hos-pital bed and who really must be considered the father of Chofetz Chaim. The speaker's table truly reflected the interest shown by the whole Jewish commun-ity for this affair and all the fine speeches and the toastmaster's handling cannot be reported in detail. I would like to mention their names and thank them on behalf of myself and Mr. Meyer Goldberg, president of the Chofetz Chaim Day School. Besides Cantor Katz and. Rabbi David Silver they were: Rabbi Leib Potashnick of Beth Hame-drash Hagodal; Rabbi Bernard Greenfield of Ohav Sholom; Rabbi David Indich of Agudas Israel; Rabbi Hyman Cohen of Agudas Achim; Rabbi Bernard Kalchman of North Avondale Congregation; and Reverend Rab-enstein of New Hope. Mr. Harry Weston, Chairman of JWF campaign and Mr. Richard Mack of the Israel Bond Committee and Judge Gilbert Bettman; Mr. Alfred Katz and Mr. Meyer Goldberg.
Last but not least the aid of the Rabbis and presidents of the following congrega-tions and sisterhoods deserve our thanks for their participation, interest and help : Agudas Achim; Agudas Israel; Beth Hamedrash Hagodal, Kenesseth Israel, Tikvah Chadosha and Yad Charutzim.
As I am taking off to Florida I will long remember the evening and am looking for-ward with great anticipation to the fine new building which the architect Mr. Dombar previewed for us. I know that its Yarmulka top will be a beacon for Jewish education in Cincinnati and in the United States.
