FOREWORD !THE JEWISH COMMUNITY of Cincinnati can be justly proud of the record of achievement as evidenced in the figures and data tabulated below. Faced with the task of raising the largest quota ever assigned since the beginning of the Jewish Welfare Fund, we exceeded our task by about $50,000.00-and it is well that we did-for before the campaign was a week old we were called upon to furnish an extra $20,000.00 to take care of the Czechoslovakia emergency-and additional amounts for increased refugee care. Unfortunately, the problem is a continuing and increasing one. Many more of our brethren are bereft of worldly goods, and the opportunity to earn a living than was true a year ago. New barriers and wider disfranchisements (sic)  have occurred, calling for increased giving and more sacrifices on our part, which has been met with unflinching spirit. Last February the Jewish Community Council completed its tenth year of service to the community. 'While at its inception in 1929 the Community Council was not an entirely new idea, it was the first Council of the modern type which survived. The officers and directors of the Council feel that those who have supported it and its subsidiary, the Jewish Welfare Fund, are entitled to a brief history of these two important communal organizations. This history appears later in this book. I am sure that when you have read it you will agree with me that Cincinnati Jewry will always meet whatever obligations it is called upon to assume.
