Cincinnati Enquirer, “Bar Mitzvah,” article from 6/13/1965

caption:
Sammy’s training began at age four with study of Hebrew and, later on, of Orthodox practices such as the wearing of “tefillin” (prayer-bands) during morning prayer, left above. Assisting his preparations (right, above) was Rabbi Manfred Rabenstein. In the Bar Mitzvah ceremony, Sammy chanted lessons from the Torah scroll (center) and the Prophets. His father, Dr. Jakob J. Petuchowski, a rabbi and professor at Hebrew Union College, pronounced the benediction, at left, declaring Sammy responsible for his own religious obligations.
