Orthodox Split On Cooperation With Other Branches NEW YORK (WNS) —
A bid for a rabbinic ban against Orthodox cooperation with Conservative and Reform elements in areas other than religion was reported to have led to a sharp schism within the ranks of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada.
Chief advocate of the injunction is said to be Rabbi Aaron Cutler, who was reported to have asserted at a recent meeting of the organization in New York that imposition of the "issur," ban, was imperative in order to halt Conservative and Reform incursions. Following Rabbi Cutler's sharp words, Rabbi Eliezer Silver, one of the oldest and most venerated figures in the Orthodox rabbinate of America, was reported to have walked out of the meeting.
The issue arose over a ban is-sued by eleven Orthodox rabbis against Orthodox cooperation with the New York Board of Rabbis and the Synagogue Council of America: However, despite the ban, both the Rabbinical Council and the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations have retained affiliation with the Synagogue Council. The Rabbinical Council has taken the position that it would take no action until its own halachic council has made a decision.
