RABBI ZELIG SHARFSTEIN Z"L
Written by Fraida Gutnick, Rabbi Sharfstein's grand-daughter
The life of Rabbi Ezriel Zelig Sharf-stein began 79 years ago on the 5th of December, corresponding to the 22nd of Kislev in the year 1928. He was born to his loving parents, Rabbi Avraham Zev Sharfstein - a very prominent Rabbi - and Esther Sharsftein, in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York in the United States of America.
Rabbi Avraham Zev was raised in Latvia and married Chaya, his first wife, who tragically passed away a num-ber of years after their marriage. Together they had three children by the names of Evelyn, Phillip and Maxie, who later became Zelig's half siblings. Rabbi Avraham Zev was offered a job as a Shochet in New York, which he needed to accept in order to sustain his family. He there-fore sailed by ship from Hamburg, Germany to New York, America on the 8th of April, 1911.
While working in New York, Rabbi Avaraham Zev met Esther, a young woman who had come to America from Warsaw, Poland. She later became his wife some time in 1925. Avraham Zev had two more sons with Esther, Mot-tel and Zelig.
