have the opportunity of eating his Yom Tov meal at the Rebbe's Tish that year.
During these years Rabbi Sharfstein was also the director of a program called "Release Time," where Yeshiva stu-dents like himself taught Judaism to children who at-tended public schools. Approximately 500 students from various public schools throughout New York took part in these programs.
The teaching took place at two locations, Yeshiva Chovevei Torah and Bais Dovid Gershon. Rabbi Sharf-stein was the regional director for 4 years, and part of his role was being in charge of financing the programs and transportation of the yeshiva boys.
Usually, Rabbi Sharfstein reported his costs to Rabbi Yankel Hecht and he was reimbursed for these expenses. In 1950, Rabbi Hecht told Rabbi Sharfstein to go to the Lubavitcher Rebbe for his reimbursements. This oc-curred during the Shiva of the Friediker Rebbe. The Rebbe asked Rabbi Sharfstein why they had spent so much money, to which he replied that a few boys had caught taxis home in order not to waste time in their learning. Rabbi Sharfstein quoted the saying that those who do a Mitzvah should be protected and arenot harmed when they go or return. The Rebbe replied that this ap-plies to their safety, not catching taxis.
