Rabbi Sharfstein went to the Rebbe for a Brocha on his 23rd birthday, during which he told the Rebbe he had completed his Smicha. The Rebbe told him to study Cho-shen Mishpot, in order to become a Dayan on a Bais din. Following this, the Rebbe kept Rabbi Sharfstein's Smicha in the top drawer of his desk.
Rabbi Sharfstein continued studying in Tomchei Temimim until his first job which was a teacher in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1952. There, he taught Jewish studies for one and a half years to elementary school stu-dents.
In 1953, Rabbi Sharfstein became a student supervisor for students in Tomchei Temimim in Pittsburgh, and was a Mashgiach there until his father passed away. Upon re-turn to New York, the Rebbe instructed him to stay with his mother in New York, even though the school wanted him to return.
So, in 1954, Rabbi Sharfstein became the principal of Bais Rivkah Elementary School in New York. Sarah Stock, Rebbetzin Sharfstein's sister, was living in New York during this time and arranged for Zelig and Rivka to be in the same bookstore where she introduced them.
