In the years 1987 and 1988, Zelig traveled to Russia while it was un-der communist rule and again in 1991 and 1992 after the fall of communism. The Russian govern-ment made practicing religion ex-tremely difficult and because of this, the Russian Jewish Communi-ties were lacking Rabbis and Shochtim. Zelig helped to build up the Jewish communities by train-ing young rabbis and shochtim to be able to handle various issues of Jewish law, as well as bringing siddurim, Tefillin and Jewish books for syna-gogues and schools.
When the Rebbe was not well in 1992, Rabbi Sharfstein was one of the five rabbis - Rabbis Marlow, Osdaba, Landa, Lieberman and himself - who were speaking to doctors, listening to treatments and working on ways to help the Rebbe recover from his illness, unfortunately these activities did not help.
