To the Family of Rabbi Zelig Sharfstein 1542 Beaverton Avenue Cincinnati, OH 45237
Dear Friends,
On behalf of the Louisville Vaad Hakashruth we would like to share condolence with you on the passing of Rabbi Sharfstein. Much of your family and indeed much of the orthodox world knew of Rabbi Sharfstein and the great things that he did for Yiddishkeit on a national and international scale. But you may not be aware of the tremendous help and guidance that he gave to the Jewish community of Louisville, Kentucky.
Twenty-five years ago our community was torn apart with various Rabbis disagreeing on everything that had to do with kosher. A group of lay leaders approached Rabbi Sharfstein and invited him to become our sole authority for kosher and put us on the proper path as a Jewish community. Rabbi Sharfstein accepted this role and faithfully served as Rav of the Louisville Vaad Hakashruth for the past quarter century. He did more for our community than anyone dreamed that he would. He set up kosher programs at the nursing home, the Jewish Community Center, and the Jewish hospital which are still being followed today. He personally traveled numerous times to Louisville to directly guide us, and he chose and trained Rabbi Avrohom Litvin to lead us as Kashruth Administrator. Louisville will be forever grateful to the efforts of Rabbi Sharfstein on our behalf.
May you be consoled among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.
Sincerely,
Nathan Goldman
P.S. I have included a copy of the sermon which Rabbi Avrohom Litvin delivered this passed Shabbat in memory of Rabbi Sharfstein.
