Leadership Council holds seminar on Soviet Jewry
On Oct. 12, Leadership Council of the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati held a seminar entitled, "The New Wave of Soviet Jewry."
Dan Mariaschin, director of international and public affairs for B'nai B'rith International discussed the background leading up to this recent wave of immigration as well as the current situation for Soviet Jews remaining in the Soviet Union.
Harriet Geller, volunteer coordinator and case manager for resettlement, with Jewish Family Service addressed the resettlement and absorption process encountered as a new Soviet Jewish family arrives in Cincinnati and the need for volunteers to assist in the process. Turning toward the personal aspects of resettlement, the Berchenko family who arrived 10 years ago from the Soviet Union and the Layderman family who arrived in June spoke on their reasons for leaving and what they have encountered upon arriving in Cincinnati. The development seminar was chaired by Cynthia Burgin and Sara Ebstein with the assistance of committee members Josh Karkavy and Christopher Kraus.
