Sadye Harris had a very long time association with the Orthodox Jewish Home for the Aged, going back to its years at Maple and Knott streets in Avondale. She was a member of the Board of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Home for close to twenty five years. Sadie helped the resident in many areas and spent much time assisting them in occupational therapy, where residents made numerous craft items. TheGift Shop at the Orthodox home has been named the Sadye Harris Gift Shop in memory of her support and in appreciation of the generosity of her family. Said Mrs. Berry Foreman, past President of the Ladies Auxiliary, “Sadye Harris was a perfect lady, quiet, reserved and sweet, and everyone loved her at the Home.”
Both Albert and Sadye Harris were born into religious families. Albert (Eliyahu) was born in Lockland, Ohio on February 7, 1897, the oldest of six children(1) of Louis (Eliezer) and Fanny (Fromme) Harris, who had married in Europe and had arrived in Cincinnati from the city of Lazde, Lithuania in 1895. Louis’ parents, Lipman Herr and his wife arrived here a year or two earlier. (2)
Louis together with Fanny, the daughter of Eliakum and Rivke Dorn, first came to Cincinnati, then spent a little time in Ironton, Ohio, then Lockland, and finally settled in downtown Cincinnati. During those years, Louis was a peddler, selling pots and pans for a living.
(1)The other children; Ann (Hasha) b. 1898, Sam (Shuel) b. 1900, Sylvia, Sadye and Revella.
(2) Lipman Herr later changed his name to Harris.
