Open Letter to the Jewish Community from Rabbi Eliezer Silver Regarding his Request that the Jewish Welfare Fund Make its Opening Campaign Dinner Kosher

caption:
WE OFFERED TO ARRANGE FOR A KOSHER DINNER ON THE SAME PREMISES AND ON THE SAME DATE BUT OUR OFFER WAS NOT ACCEPTED.

IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT THERE IS A GROUP OF PEOPLE, WHO ARE ASHAMED OF KASHRUTH AND SEEMINGLY CONSIDER KOSHER AS ABOMINABLE.

WE HAVE FAITH IN YOUR LOYALTY TO ORTHODOXY AS AGAINST THE WISHES OF A FEW INDIVIDUALS WHO INSIST ON PRESSING THEIR REFORM BELIEFS ON THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY. WE APPEAL TO YOU, OUR BRETHREN, NOT TO BREAK OUR HEARTS BY DESECRATING OUR TORAH. YOU ARE ALSO GOOD JEWS AND GOOD AMERICANS, PROTECT US AND RESPECT OUR FEELINGS AND OUR BELIEFS. MAKE THIS A KOSHER DINNER: WE APPEAL TO ALL JEWS WHO RESPECT OUR ANCIENT AND BEAUTIFUL LAWS TO DO ALL IN THEIR POWER TO PERSUADE THE WELFARE FUND TO STOP THIS WRONG FROM BEING PERPETRATED, AND IF G-D FORBID, WE FAIL IN OUR ENDEAVOR, THEN SHOW YOUR PROTEST BY NOT PARTICIPATING IN THIS YEAR IS ANNUAL DINNER AND MEETING.

The following is translated from Yiddish at the bottom of the page:

Protest and warning has been received from AGUDATH HORABONIM. Union of ORTHODOX RABBIS of U.S. & C. and from other National Orthodox leaders, expressing they were profoundly shocked of such travesty of jewish law, especially unpardonable in a community where one of the greatest leaders of the world Jews foremost rabbinic authorities is there, they vigorously protested against this plagrant violation and firmly demand not to participate in such dinner and meeting I therefore with the HASKOMO of the AGUDATH HORABONIM am announcing
an "ISUR" not to be present at the meeting and drive on Sunday April 4th at Netherland Plaza Hotel where the TREIFO and NEVEILO dinner is arranged.

With Kashruth greeting RABBI ELIEZER SILVER, presidium member of AGUDATH HORABONIM, chief Rabbi of Cincinnati, Ohio
