Dear Friends,
I was asked to send my thoughts about B'nai Tzedek and only one thing kept coming to mind. Louis used to always joke that B'nai Tzedek was the best congregation east of the Rockies (or was that West of New York?). With each passing year I'm beginning to question more and more whether the statement was meant to be humorous. No matter which synagogue I attend there seems to be something missing, a certain warmth which I identify with B'nai Tzedek. Initially I thought it might be the singing, yet I've participated in services conducted by Cantors with magnificent voices. Perhaps it was the intimacy. Everyone knew and cared for each other. Perhaps it was the participation by the congregation in the service itself. To be honest I really don't know. Maybe trying to define the uniqueness of B'nai Tzedek is impossible, you just have to be there. B'nai Tzedek was the first congregation I officiated at as a rabbi. I know that in my search for the ideal congregation where I will ultimately settle, I will always use B'nai Tzedek as a comparison. My standards are high.
Mazel Tov on your 18th anniversary.
Shalom,
Rabbi Ronald Brown
