Tallis and Atara

1913

caption:
The atara was made in 1913 in Romania.  It was buried in the owner’s basement during WII.  The entire family was sent to Auschwitz.  A few members survived and came back to their house.  They discovered that they house had been used as the German military headquarters during the Nazi occupation.  It had been bombed and many high ranking Germans were killed in it.

After the war it was smuggled out of Hungry in 1956 during the 3 days that the border was open.  The atara went to Shmuel Reshef who became a general in the Israel Defense Forces, and rose to be second in command of the IDF.  After his death, it came to the next closest relative living in Cincinnati.
