Professor Dr. Karl Landsteiner (1868 - 1943), born in Vienna Austria on June 14, 1868.

He was an Austrian American immunologist and pathologist who received the 1930 Nobel Prize for Physiology / Medicine for his discovery of the major blood groups and the development of the ABO system of blood typing that has made blood transfusion a routine medical practice.

In 1931 the Netherlands established a Blood Transfusion Service and began awarding medals to 5x- donors. 15x-donors received a large plaque with their name inscribed.
