days of 1950, attended by about 300 persons.
A Passover Seder was held for the first time for the congregation on the second night of Pesach, Rabbi Goldfeder and Cantor Rosen officiating. The dinner was served by the Sisterhood.
Plans to celebrate the Centennial Year of Adath Israel in 1951 were launched in the late summer. Inasmuch as the original charter was dated March 24th,1851, it was felt that such an observance was appropriate. Louis Weiland and Murray J.Bergman were appointed co-chairmen of the Committee on Arrangements. Under their leadership, many members of the congregation have rendered distinguished service on the various subcommittees.
Synagogual Music
Throughout its entire history, Adath Israel Congregation has made the traditional chants of the Hebrew service an important part of its ritual. There are only incomplete records about the early Cantors. In the 1880's, it appears, there was a Cantor named Lasker. Later the names of Linenfeld and Levinson appear. In 1869 and 1890 there was a Cantor named Cohanem. Others, in turn, were L. Levine, 1890-91; Jonap 1892, Samuel J.Bendet who officiated from 1894 until he died in the pulpit on Aug. 11th,1897; D. Falk, who functioned a short time after that; Joseph Magrill 1898 to 1912, who later moved to Jerusalem; L.Kurland 1912-13; Morris Lichtenstein 1913-16; J. Steiner 1916-18; Joseph Weinberg 1916-20; and Solomon Brownstein, who became Cantor in January 1921 and served until his death a few years later.
Emil Rosen was formally installed as Cantor Sept. 1st,1934, and has been serving ever since. Mr. Rosen's fine voice, together with his knowledge of traditional cantorial music, have added to the dignity and beauty of the services. His readiness to participate in congregational gatherings and community events gives great pleasure to his hearers and has brought added joy to many functions.
