A choir was introduced for the High Holy days of 1927. On April 27th of that year, the congregation authorized Cantor Brownstein to engage choir at a cost not to exceed $1200. Samuel Rosenberg, then President, offered, in addition, to pay up to $800 for the employment of a choir leader, to serve under the direction of the Cantor. Emmanuel Gottlieb was subsequently engaged to serve in that capacity from July 1st to Oct. 31st, 1927. This choir also gave an added touch of color to the ceremonies, formally opening the present Synagogue.
While the choir was a temporary innovation at that time, in recent years it has become a permanent feature of the holiday and late Friday evening services.
TheĀ Cemetery
As noted earlier, the congregation acquired three and a half acres of ground fronting on Sunset Ave., Price Hill, for a cemetery in 1855. The deed was recorded at the County Court House Nov. 6th, 1855, and showed that the purchase was made from Bernard Wise and his wife, Sarah Wise, for $450. The congregation was represented by Louis Levy, Louise Wiener, Philip Jacobs and F. Rosenthal, as Board of Trustees, according to the deed. Half that ground was later sold to Congregation Searith Israel.
The cemetery has served the congregation through nearly a century since, and hundreds of its members and their families have found here their eternal resting place.
However, in recent years it became obvious that enlarged facilities would be needed. In the summer of 1948, accordingly, on authorization of the Board of Trustees, a committee composed of Mr. Glass, Mr. Jacobs, and Mr. Weiland, Harvey Richman and Maurice Beck completed the purchase of slightly more than two acres of land adjoining the original plot.
In a statement issued in the fall of 1949, Mr. Jacobs, as Chairman of the Cemetery Committee, pointed out that for a great many years, the burial ground was sadly neglected, and that the Committee had undertaken to put
