Obverse: The Frankenhuis Commemorative Art Medal depicts a mother and two children halting under police guard at a railroad station, before being herded onto the cattle car which will transport them to a strange and cruel fate (“the final solution”). Like countless others, this mother has been torn from the life she knew and love and to which she has every right as a human being; now she faces the stark moment of abandonment which has been termed “an agony of death.” Courageous, though tormented, she clasps her babes in a protective embrace against the surrounding nightmare. The eye can see the “Star of David” on the little girls’ garments, meant to be a mark of shame, but worn by the innocent martyrs as a badge of honor.
