THINKING Jewishly
BY REB SH'MUEL GRATEFUL TO THE BRIM
Please forgive me if I burden you with my own personal feelings. Would that I were blessed with the ability to tell you exactly how I reacted to the events of last week, when the local Israel Bond Commit-tee carried through its annual appeal to the members of the Orthodox Synagogues for the purchase of bonds. When I was first approached several weeks ago, for my consent that the appeal and desert banquet should be in my honor, I was not at all certain that their choice of my name was very wise, but it was not for me to express myself on that score. Frankly, I did not believe that the use of my name would produce an appreciable in-crease in the sale of bonds to others and as far as I was concerned, my own purchase would have to stay at a $100 limit. You can appreciate how overwhelmed I am with complex emotions as a result of the $65,000 and more of bonds purchased In my honor. I feel grateful to the brim. Of course, I am very happy with all the nice things that were said about me, and the beautiful plaque and album presented to me, but my happiness is infinitely greater in the knowledge that my way of life has influenced others to find happiness in the purchase of Israeli Bonds and in doing me honor. Thanks a million.

I do feel it a personal obligation to mention Rabbi Hyman Cohen. He delivered a masterful speech and I'm grateful for his generous appraisal of me. Also Isidore Schifrin, who, I suspect, was the instigator of my name. Naturally, I feel thankful to every one who purchased bonds and espe-cially to that anonymous purchaser of the $10,000 bond. Would that I could mention the name. And to the hostesses and all who helped to make the evening such an event-ful one. I am not unmindful of the assistance that was given me by the stalwart veteran Israeli Bond salesman, Dr. Morris Hyman, a former chairman of the Cincinnati Com-mittee, State of Israel Bonds, for making such a wonderful appeal in behalf of the Bond campaign and for conducting the suc-cessful sale of Bonds at the Orthodox con-gregation's dessert-supper at Congregation Ohav Shalom. Dr. Hyman, in addition to be-ing an outstanding worker in the Bond drive, is chairman of the Kfar Silver, cam-paign for the high school in Israel, and is active in the Jewish National Fund and Zionist Organization of America. Last but not least, I must confess, that Rabbi Eliezer Silver's warm expression of personal friendship aroused a multitude of tender emotions within me. You see, his friendship is in spite of the short comings that he finds in me.
