Jewish Military Prior to the Establishment of the State of Israel
Description
On the 1st of February, 1944 the High Command of the National Military Organization (the "Etzel") published its announcement of a revolt, declaring "War to the very end" on British rule in the Land of Israel. The underground began an armed struggle which continued for four years, until the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.
There were attacks on government offices, police stations, military camps and airfields, including the bomb attack on the civilian and military headquarters in the King David Hotel in Jerusalem. The British reacted by arresting and imprisoning the fighters and those who supported them, expelling them from the country, imposing curfews, setting up detention camps in the towns, and even sentenced some to death by hanging.
This medal serves to mark and commemorate the contribution of the underground that fought to drive out foreign rule, and establish an independent Jewish State in the Land of Israel.
This medal was struck in bronze and is 59mm / 98gr
