INDEED, THIS IS THE YEAR of many significant anniversaries: 100 years ago the well-known Isaacs family, whose brilliant descendants distinguished them-selves in various fields of education, and were observers of the Torah and Orthodox re-ligion, first settled in Cincinnati. 100 years ago the first Rabbi of Cincinnati, Rabbi J. Bernard Illoway, a talmid of the Goen Chsam Sofer and of the illustrious Reb Shmuel Luzati, was elected The Rabbi of the Cincinnati Jewry, and the American Israelite was first published. 90 years ago the Beth Tephillah Shul was organized by Reb Schachne Isaacs, Moses Rosen-baum, Kalman Hirschman, A. Wolf, A. Loth and others. 87 years ago Dr. Hersh Illoway, a great physician and an observer of the Sabbath, finished his studies. 85 years ago the first Kosher meat market was established in Cincinnati. 76 years ago the Ohav Shalom Shul was organized. 75 years ago the Hachnosas Orchim Society was founded. 70 years ago the B. Manischewitz Matzo Co. was established to bring world-wide renown to our community. 70 years ago the Beth Medrash Hagodol Congregation was founded. 70 years ago the Talmud Torah Society was established. 65 years ago the Hebrew Free Loan Society was founded. 60 years ago the Anshei Shalom Rumanian Congregation was organized. 60 years ago the Somech Noflim Benevolent Aid Society was organized by our women to help and comfort the needy. 60 years ago the Congregation Yad Charutzim was organized. 60 years ago the Talmud Torah was reorganized. 54 years ago Rabbi A. G. Lesser, of Blessed Memory, was elected the first President of the Agudath Horabonim, upon the organization of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the U. S. and Canada. 50 years ago the Moshev Zkeinim Home for the Aged was organized and built. 40 years ago the Yeshiva Etz Chaim was established. 35 years ago the Jewish Social Agency was established to conduct its noble works of charity. 30 years ago the Kenesseth Israel Congregation was organized under the leadership of the Miller, Manischewitz, Oscherwitz, Levine families and others. 30 years ago the Every Friday was established by Mr. and Mrs. Samuel M. Schmidt. 25 years ago the Beth Shalom Sephardic Congregation was founded and also the Kosher Kit-chen at the Jewish Hospital. 20 years ago the new G'milas Chessed was established in the name of the late Rebetzin Bassa Silver for the granting of smaller loans to the needy. 18 years ago the Congregation Tikvo Chadosho was organized by Dr. L. Tietz and Rabbi Silver for the Orthodox newcomers from Germany. 10 years ago the Chofetz Chaim Day School and Kindergarten were established in their own quarters through the efforts of Rabbi Silver, Dr. M. Zalesky, 1. Goodman, S. M. Schmidt, B. Berkowitz, M. Goldberg, E. Jacobs, the Moskowitz family, B. Levinson, N. Nathan and many others. 3 years ago Sheltering Oaks was established.
