Description
The Jewish Loan Institute Hamburg was created in response to the situation of the poor Jewish population in Hamburg just after Napoleon’s defeat. The Jews of that time were largely dependent on per-night work in the junk trade and road work, almost entirely excluded from commercial activity, even in retail. In 1816 Eduard Michaelis stepped onto the scene to found and work administratively in this institution to help the Jewish population by offering loans.

This medal is depicted in Coins Reveal: The Samuel and Daniel M. Friedenberg Collection of Coins and Medals (The Jewish Museum Collection Handbooks), item 161.
