As a result of their bold moves for peace, Sadat being the first leader of an Arab country to recognize Israel and seek peace with it, and Begin being willing to return all of the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt, Sadat and Begin shared the 1978 Nobel Peace Prize for their historic agreement at Camp David. Sadat’s bold initiative ultimately cost him his life. He was assassinated by a Palestinian who belonged to a group which opposed peace with Israel.
This medal was issued to commemorate the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Anwar El Sadat in 1978. It was issued in Copper with a nickel plating and is 40mm in diameter. It is unknown if a similar medal was issued to commemorate Begin’s sharing of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1978.
