INSCRIPTIONS
Across the frieze in bold Hebrew characters runs the name of the congregation
"Holy Congregation Adath Israel"
Over the central door are three words from Psalm 118
"This is the gate of the Lord"
Immediately over the Ark are three words from Isaiah 55:6
"Seek ye the Lord while he is to be found"
Around the base of the dome runs what appears to be a continuous inscription. On closer examination it is fund to consist of passages expressing religious sentiment from the Pentateuch, the Psalms, the Prophets, the Mishnah, a medieval poet and a modern Hebrew poet. "This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven." (Genesis 28:17.)
"Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise." (Psalms 100:4.)
"Who shall ascend into the mountain of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not taken My name in vain, and hath not sworn deceitfully. (Psalms 24:3-4.)
